7/23/40 From Dotty

                                                               7/23/40

Zoomer -
      Will you forgive me?!!! -
I dashed down to the railroad last night and was so pleased when I dropped your letter in the mail box - Then - when I got home remembered that I hadn't stamped it.  I hope I get it back today and I'll send it right out.

I studied for a while then went to bed at 11:00 and went sound to sleep.  I feel a lot better today - not so sleepy. -  Tonight guess I'll wind up lesson 9 and mail it in.  Whee -

Not so busy as we could be and I'm afraid "C"  might notice what I am doing and make some crack - I hope not. -

Sue and I are going to have lunch together today, and then I will be broke - Happy fun games -

Beverly still has her Figi pin - I have given up trying to figure things out.  And am just going to take things as they come and go.

Pretty soon we can go swimming just outside our window here.  The big pond is progressing very rapidly.  I do hope it doesn't bring too many bugs -  When the plywood starts up there will be just that much more dust and dirt around here.

Remind me to see Bill Berg and get those pictures from him.  I would like to see and have them - Wouldn't you???  Guess I will have to buy a camera so we can take lots of pictures.

I am trying awful hard to find a ride to Portland this weekend - so far without success - If you here of anything - let me know - or have them call me - or somepin-

I feel so ambitious; there are about 1000 things I would like to do - and I'm just in the mood to do them.  Hope I stay that way for a while.  Think I will make some cookies or cup cakes if I have the stuff at home to make them with.  We'll see tonight -

Don't be surprized if you hear from me again after I get your letter today -

                                          Lots of love, Bill

July 17, 1940 From Bill

                                                                                    Wednesday

Dear Dotty,

Have just read your last letter for the sixteenth time and it is really all right except a couple of the shorthand symbols are hard to figure out - anyway the general idea seems to concern kisses and I hope you are the same - so here are more for you too: [Ed note: some symbols follow. Tried to find a way to translate on internet but couldn't.]

You probably won't believe it but I woke up this morning with a sore throat - can't figure it out, unless the covers slipped off during the nite - Hope it doesn't get serious - and to think I've been gargling for 3 days - I will probably be better by this weekend, and don't you worry a bit cause I don't think it was your fault at all-

Mr. Couch got things moving yesterday afternoon and today I have an office, and it is very fine -
Have a desk, telephone, table, venetian blinds, etc - and it is very private - Am going to have a loud-speaker arrangement with Mr. Couch's office which is downstairs - When you come up this weekend I will show it to you.

Am happy to hear that you are coming up on the train instead of the jelopy - tell me when and I will meet you and everything - here it is only Wednesday - I am going to work on something that will make the middles of the week go faster and the weekends slower - anyway what I am trying to tell you that I am looking forward an awful lot to seeing you Saturday -

Ran my car through the Portland police testing station yesterday and everything was swell except that the left headlight is unsatisfactory - so the company is fixing it up and then I should get through all right.

Your list of things to do sounds pretty good - wouldn't be surprised if we took care of them all right - especially the one about being with you - or me -

And your suggestion about the cookies and stuff is a wonderful idea - need I say more -

Tony and I didn't do much Monday night except drive a couple of buckets of golf-balls at Lloyd's and then went to a show - also had a couple of beers - Tony walked off the next morning with one of my toothbrushes and left his - can't understand it cause his is green and mine is red -

At the present time Bob Vaughn and Bob Mosier are up here listening to the radio and making disparaging remarks about my writing this letter - but maybe they aren't in love - I know Von isn't - by the way, he was telling me that Dotty Lou Hanan was in Portland over last weekend and Von kind of took care of her - only you and I know that - Jane doesn't -

I would like to get a glimpse of Harkie's letter - would that what she said were so or something ---

                                                               Love -
                                                                     Bill
