July 31, 1940 from Bill

                                                                                  Wednesday

Hello, dear -
Was just a wee bit disappointed at receiving only a postcard from you, but it was nice to know that you got down there all right and seem to be swinging out already - what with the swimming and horseback riding -
Your cabin sounds as though it's located in about the right place - By the way, remember to tell me how big it is and whether or not Jane could stay with you next Sat. nite - As far as I know, Von and Jane want to come down with me -
Also between now and Friday Saturday you better tell me your exact address so we can find you when we arrive in Seaside somewhere about 3 or 4 o'clock Sat afternoon - And remember not to catch a cold or anything like that in the meanwhile -
This week seems to be going a lot slower than the last two - don't know exactly why - except maybe that I'm not quite as busy as usual -  Mr. Couch is leaving Saturday morning and before he leaves he is going to prepare a big list of things for me to do while he is gone - I have started to take home this big book on Hospital Management, which has about 975 pages in fine type, and it really is rather interesting reading, even if it is a textbook -
Von and I went out and played 9 holes at Broadmoor this evening - it is a nice little course - with a lot of water holes - I was only 4 over par for the nine, which ain't bad considering it was the first time I played it - Von lost 3 balls in the water -
Oh, by the way, I have told the landlady I am moving as soon as she can arrange it, which will probably be the customary two weeks -
Anyway, I am going to move one block up the street and room with Bob Mosier, who you may recall is the DU who is working in an architect's office down town - it seems to be a fairly nice place and is very reasonable - $25 for room and 2 meals - breakfast and dinner -
Last night Mose and I went out and visited Henry Ash at the Morningside Hospital - we had a lot of fun and he told us quite a bit about some of his patients - all of them are from Alaska - and most of them are Eskimos and Indians - altogether there are about 400 out there - along about midnight he took us down to the kitchen and we had pumpkin pie, ice cream, and a glass of cream to drink -
I am looking forward more and more each minute to this weekend and seeing you again - one week it's Portland, then Eugene, then Seaside - all I can say it's a good thing I got a car - but it is a lot of fun - I certainly hope the weather is okay as I would like to get out in the sun and help my poor old tan out a bit - I am really getting to be a white boy -
In case I haven't told you, it would be very sweet of you to write me every day this week - especially since there aren't many more left and also because I will probably write you every nite - whoever said absence makes the heart grow fonder knew what he was talking about -
It looks as though I better stop and get this letter down town if I want it to go out tonight, as it is getting late - So please write right away sweet if you can take time out from having fun -
                                                                  Love,
                                                                      Bill

(Ed. note: These photos were stuck in with this letter, but no explanation.... Must be the ones from the July 25 letter, stuck in the wrong envelope at some point....)

(Ed. note:  More links on Morningside Hospital OHSU Blog, Health Care to NativeAmericans, Wikipedia,
It was on Mt. TaborAlaska Standard  and there are lots more sites if you just do a search for Morningside Hospital.)

Postcard from Seaside July 31, 1940

(Ed. note:  this should have gone before the previous letter.  A little mixed up until I actually read them and figure out the order.  Sorry)

379 E. 12th, Eugene Oregon

This is the house where Dotty lived in Eugene during the summer of 1940.  Photo taken July 7, 2010, seventy years later.  It appears to be a duplex, and the 379 address is for the left side as you face the house.
It was evidently a fraternity house, but by 1940 had been turned into apartments.

My guess is that she lived in the downstairs.  The article said the upper apartments had a Mill St. address.

July 31, 1940 From Dotty postmarked Seaside Oregon

                                                                          Wednesday

Dearest -
You letter was so sweet and I was so glad to get it.  We stopped in at the postoffice on our way to the horses and there it was.
Dammit got here fine and I wasn't even a bit tired from driving.  We have developed a few more squeaks but everything else is fine.
We have an awfully cute little cabin - only a half block from the ociean.
Had a swell ride, followed this trail and then went along the beach a little ways -  Just got thru eating a caramel apple - awful good - but oohhh - how sticky -
Bill I don't know what to do about Jane - It would be swell if she could stay here but our bed is not too big - an extra charge is made for extra guests, and H.G. has a bad cold as well as not being too enthusiastic about it - Sooo I don't know what to do - Any-how I don't know what to do -
Haven't been out in the sun yet, but plan to this afternoon - We finally got up enough courage to go to the dance last night.  Bill Van Dusen was at the door and he convinced us that it would be all right -  It was a lot of fun - but I turned down more goofy looking guys - that wasn't so good - but we danced with Bill once and then a couple of cute fellows.  We did a good job of robbing the cradle - but they were cute & fun.  Louie Brainerd is working here, too, as well as Ralph Lafferty.  Tonight if we go to the dance we are going to dress to look about 16 or 17 -  It is fun tho, to listen to the music & watch the people dance.  Better than sitting home in a cold cabin. -
Glad you don't have to work so hard now - A lot better for your constitution - We should have a lot of fun Saturday night when you come - We are at the Avery Cottages, #4, which are 3 blocks south of Broadway one block from the prom.
Am having lots of fun - wish you were here -
We stopped at Cannon Beach on our way here and may go there Friday to ride -

                                                Looking forward to
                                                   seeing you -

                                                 Lots of love,

                                                     Dotty
