Monday

Hello, sweet -
What a day!  It is now exactly 7:07 PM by the clock and I have been busy ever since you departed yesterday evening -  Following your instructions, I immediately went to bed at 10:30 last nite and slept like a log (almost) until 7:30; after arising and taking a bath, I had my usual breakfast of Wheaties (The Breakfast of Champions) and dashed up the hill arriving promptly at 8:27.  After a short series of "Good mornings" to the rest of the hired help, I proceeded to work like hell until 12:00 high noon - of course in the interim I took a few times out to think some sweet thoughts of you and start looking forward to next weekend - and here it is only Monday - oh, sad state of affairs, guess I will start singing the song "Alone" -
At 12:15 I found myself in the midst of the city in an elevator going up to the doctor's office, where I had some eye exercises till 12:45 which left me with practically no lunch hour, also no lunch, but I grabbed a milk shake nevertheless - and back to work, also receiving a letter from Karl and some misc. mail -
At 5:00 dashed over to the testing station and received an OK on my lites - so now that is fixed up - Then got a haircut which took quite a load off my mind - and then to having a crab louie and a glass of beer for dinner -
Incidentally, it is a very fine thing that we did not buy a dinner for you on account of I spent all my money today and now have the imposing sum of 47 ¢ ready cash -  Guess I better start worrying or pulling strings or something -
Did you get home okay I hope no doubt - and how are you a little sleepy that's what I thought -  Is your car completely repaired again or what - and do you miss me yet, already, I hope -  Also how is the bag and what did the man say -
Got my Associated credit card today and it certainly came at the right time, considering the state of my pocketbook affairs at the present time -  Anyway, the car is now very full of gas -
As soon as I finish this letter I am going back up to the office and work for a couple hours - Couch is really pouring on the work now and it looks as though it would be a wise move if I got me a place to live up on the hill so I could be close enough to do a lot of work at nite which looks probably -
The radio is really playing some swell music - wish you were here to help me listen -
By the way - might have a ride for you back to Eugene next Sunday night - Tony is finishing his vacation then and will be going down  seems to me he said he would be in Portland next Sunday - so I'll see what the deal is then -
Von just walked in and is now trying to talk me out of going back to work and I have a hunch he will succeed -  I have a headache and my eyes hurt so I think I will kiss it off - now I feel better -
Want to thank you once again for the luggage and the happy birthday - honestly, I really had a swell time over the weekend and I hope we can have many more of them - guess you know how I feel -
Also I will write you more than two letters this weekend -
                                                                               Love and kisses,
                                                                                               Bill

July 22 ? 1940 - this is the one that was returned for postage due

Hi Sweet -
I almost forgot to write - no, I didn't forget - just slipped my mind. Helengray and I have been riding around etc.  I went down and saw her horses and hope chest (despair barrel).  She has a wonderful start - about 18 dishtowels, 7 or 8 bathtowels, etc. - Guess I best get on the boat.
Please excuse the stationary again, but it's the first thing I grabbed up - when I hit the house.  You know it's kinda lonesome - Don't know whether I like being here alone or not.  At least I'll get a few things accomplished.  Am getting set to study now, as soon as I mail this.
I got home at 1:40 last night - and then couldn't go to sleep when I did get to bed.  Don't know why but I kept thinking about you.  Guess I missed you.  In fact, I did.  But if I can just manage to keep busy it will be all right.  The more I think about it the more I think it would be nice if you could live on the hill.  Alot better to be close, and the walk in the fresh air will be very invigorating -
Darn, my budget will never balance, I think I'm just as much in debt now as I was a while back; but now I have a very stiff plan fixed up, and I will not buy anything new for a long time.  That way, In October I should be above water and maybe can save a little.
The lights just went out and I'm practically in the dark.  The big light in the center is the only one that work.  A fuse must have blown out or something.  But they will be fixed soon, I hope - In fact, they are now - Whee-
I know I gained about 5 pounds this weekend.  But I'll lose it this week.  Wish you were here, then you could come eat with me.
I bought some yarn today, so guess I'll start knitting Juanita a sweater for her baby in my off moments.  It shouldn't take as long as the last one I did cause the pattern is simpler.  Anyway I think it will be awfully cute.
My car certainly runs a lot better now and the brake doesn't stick nor nothin'. I might even drive up myself next weekend.  The gas wouldn't cost as much as the train, or would it - I don't know.  Anyway - we'll see.
I took you suitcase back today are they will fix it.  The little catch was in the wrong place and had jammed it.  Anyway they'll fix it or give us another one.
Wish I could fly to Portland.  It would be much quicker - I hate to waste 3 or 4 hours just sitting traveling along.  -  I know, though, can take my knitting along next time.  But people would just die when they see me knitting "little garments". -
Please write to me today tomorrow, will you - even if it's only to say "hello" -

                                                         I love you -
                                                             Dotty -
