March 31, 1941 Monday

                                                                                       Monday

Hello, dear,
Wish I could have been with you more over the weekend but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.  I hope you didn't mind too much - and as you well know, it won't happen again.  In a way, I'm kinda glad you didn't see Mr. Byrne's cottage, as now you'll still have that to look forward to, and anyway it's probably more romantic that way.
And if you only knew how much I thought about you while I was over there Saturday and Sunday, thinking about what we would be doing two weeks from now and how you would like this and that and everything -  The more I think of the idea, the more perfect the place seems as a spot for a honeymoon, and I hope you think so too -
Have had a headache all day - there was too much rain and traffic last nite to make it a pleasant trip, and I was really seeing spots before my eyes  by the time we got to Portland.  Anyway, I'll sure be glad when I won't have to make all these trips to Eugene.
Am going to move into the apartment tomorrow nite, I hope, providing I can get Bob to help me move some of my stuff.  Went up today and unpacked the rest of the dishes - finding that there was one cup missing.  I am going to have lots of fun keeping house the next couple of weeks - wish you were here ------
Received a long letter from Tony today - he is at Fort Scott which is just south of San Francisco.  he is having lots of fun doing nothing, he says, on account of he is in the medical detachment and they don't have to drill or anything like the boys who fight.  Outside of one hour a day when he is handing out prescriptions in the pharmacy, he doesn't have anything to do except sit around and throw it with the rest of the boys.  He says however that he has sacrificed quite a lot for his country by giving up golf.
Oh yes, he can't come to the wedding as he can only get a weekend off and that isn't quite enough -
Have you seen Dick Clark yet about being an usher - hope he can do it - honestly, Dotty, I don't know who to get -
Do you think it would be all right to ask Paul MacCaskill - as long as he is going to be there and everything-
Just had a bright idea today - I am making a list of things to do before the wedding and honeymoon - as soon as they are taken care of I'll cross them off - so this weekend I will show it to you and we can get everything all finally settled -  although I really think you are arranging things to perfection already - after I got a few things on my list I realized how much you had taken care of - yes, sweet, I think you are wonderful - now if you would only sell your car, don't think we would have anything to worry about.
Just found out that Bob Moser has a swell new Eastman Kodak, so am going to ask him about borrowing it for the honeymoon - don't you think that's a pretty good idea -
Happy April 1, dear,  -- only 13 days until April 13 - and I think I am getting more thrilled all the time-
                                                                                        Love,
                                                                                               Bill

Hello Sweetness ( or should I say Stranger!)
It sure seemed funny having you here, yet not having you.  And it was swell of you to bother with Wava.  Her dress is all finished - and hanging up in my closet -
I didn't tell you we went to bed at 9:30 Sat. night, but we did - Guess I'm not as young and ambitious as I used to be -
Am worried about this silly old physical exam, but will go down tomorrow noon and either get it over with or make an appointment.  I still don't know who to go to -
I'm all thrilled about our "Honeymoon Cabin" - It really sounds like a wonderful place.
Put $5.40 worth of dimes in the bank today - which totals $26.10-  Not bad - Although $15.00 of that is for the church and what not.  I figured up how much money I owe, and wasn't too pleased - but it's all fun and it reall isn't too bad -
Oh happy fun games -  Hope you got home all right last night, And I'll see you next week -
                                                                         All my love,  Dotty

Bridal Shower article, and I found the missing letter

The letter that was supposed to be in the March 26 envelope was found in the April 3 envelope - so if you read the earlier confusing letter about the physical exam, it is now gone and replaced with the correct one.  You will read the physical exam letter on April 3.

In the meantime, here is the link to the Register-Guard article about the shower.

March 27, 1941 Thursday

                                                                                                Thursday

Hi, my love -
Today has been lots of fun - Mr. Couch thought we were about due for some exercise, so we played golf all afternoon .  The weather is really swell, and I even picked up the start of a tan today.  Should help it if I go down to the beach too.  Still haven't decided what we are going to do about the trip, but I think if you didn't mind too much, it would work out better if I went down with Mr. Byrne.  Guess maybe we could stand being apart for an extra day - there won't be many more.
Mr. and Mrs. Couch told me they thought they could come down to Eugene for the wedding, providing the weather is O.K.  And they think it was nice of us to ask Dick and Caraline too.
I went down to the P.G.E. Co. today and had to fill out a big questionnaire to get the lights turned on.  Anyway, they asked me to put my wife's name down too, even if we're not married yet - how do you like the name Dorothy Zimmerman anyway?
Also broke down and got a few clothes - just a tan sport shirt and a pair of brown gabardine slacks - should match your outfit -
Don't worry about what the ushers should wear - I've decided we are all going to wear tuxes and that should settle it, I hope - Think that on an occasion like this, I ought to look my best, and a tux should help.
Had a couple of beers after the golf game and the effects still haven't worn off.  As soon as they do, I'm going up to the office and catch up on a little work.  After all, I am taking Saturday off too and my conscience is beginning to object.
Had my car all fixed up with a $3.30 grease job, so it's in pretty good shape for the trip tomorrow.  If things go all right we should be in Eugene about 8:00 tomorrow evening.  Am bringing your Aunt Edna, Wava, and Bob Moser x
Remember to figure out what utensils and stuff I should bring back to Portland with me - I don't know a thing about such things myself.
                                  See you soon -
                                                           Love,
                                                                  Bill
                                                                                   Thursday

Just think tomorrow I see you again -  It's all right if you don't bring the trunk this time - Also I don't mind not going to Kay Kyser's -  Also, guess what?-  We have to have a doctor's certificate before we can get the license and that takes about 4 days - So we'll have to wait till next weekend -

I'm so thrilled - the shower was wonderful - got 9 spoons - one salad fork - one cocktail fork - and the cutest little pickle fork - isn't it wonderful -  I ordered the cake today for the reception and I counted up who and how many are likely to come - the number is around 65!!!  - But it'll be lots & lots of fun -
My dress is all finished and it's sure pretty-
Mr. Collins said he got the invitation and he thot it was pretty nice -  I've only got five left to send - as soon as I get their addresses -
Oh happy day - I'll be waiting for you Friday P.M-
                                                                               All my love
                                                                                        Dotty

March 26, 1941 Wednesday

Hello, sweetheart -
Thanks for the addresses.  My list is now down to eight and I have five invitations left -  Sooooo --  Anyway I'm glad that worry is about over with -   A lot up in the B.O. said they had received their invites -
About this beach trip - I really don't know what to do - Guess tho you really should see how things work and the lay of the land - If we went down Sunday that would be a long drive for you (Aunt Edna called last night and wanted to know could she come too, I said sure and I didn't think you'd mind.  She doesn't get to go many places and I'd like her to see a few of my things - Is it all right with you, dear?  - She can sit in the back with lots of pillows -)
To get back to the cabin - Maybe you could go down Saturday and come back - or even stay - if you're here Friday and Sunday - Course it would be more fun to have you here all the time - It isn't absolutely necessary that I go - Anyway, dear, you figure it out, huh -
If Karl can't get here for the practise it can't be helped - whoever will walk up the aisle with him can tell him what to do - Let's see now - who will be the ushers? -  Karl, & Bob Moser for sure and maybe Von - How about asking Dick Clark - He'll be here in Eugene and maybe he'd like to do it - Don't you think? -
Also, dear, do you know for sure what the men wear.  It might be that dark suits are O.K. - can you ask around and I'll ask, too, some more.  It's really kind of complicated, isn't it - Tried on my dress last night and it's really pretty! -  Asked Bucky to be a bridesmaid and she said O.K. - In fact we've already ordered the material -
Lottie Nagel congratulated me today and said she thot you were a pretty swell fellow - I said I did, too -
And so puddin pie - tomorrow's Thursday, then Friday - Oh happy day -
                                                                           All my love,
                                                                                    Dotty

                                                                                         Wednesday

Hello, dear -
Looks as though I am going to have a couple more passengers than I anticipated on Friday, now that your Aunt Edna is going too.  And Bob Moser wants to go down also.  So I wondered whether you needed the trunk yet - maybe I better wait and bring it down the following week, or what do you think.
Vada was all thrilled at getting the invitation today - she also thinks they are very nice - and after all they really aren't big either.
Listen, dear, you better not waste any time selling that car of yours if you get a chance.  Time is growing short and it might take a little while to find a cash purchaser.  And incidentally, I wouldn't be surprised if we could use the money very nicely.  Honestly, I am certainly not going to have a heck of a lot of money for April - every once in a while I really get worried.  And I'm also afraid we'll have to skip Kay Kyser this Friday nite - hope you don't mind too much -
Golly, this weather is wonderful - I am just hoping it keeps up another month at least-
Haven't been working too hard this week - won't know for sure how to finish the budget until we hear from Collins Friday.
Gosh, I just can't wait to see you Friday - it really seems like an awful long time since I was in Eugene two weeks ago - By the way, would it be all right if I slept on your davenport Friday nite - won't get there till after 8:00 so there won't be much time to look around for a bed -
                                                                                       Love,
                                                                                           Bill

March 25, 1941 Tuesday "Am starting to try to sell my car tonite but I just seem to kinda hate to tackle the job-"

                                                                                       Tuesday

Hello - Tootsie Boo-
Sorry I didn't write last night but had to work -
Tonight's the night I'm mailing the invitations altho I still haven't all the addresses- But a lot of people are wondering when it is - And I heard in a roundabout way that the kids in Portland want to come up - I asked Bucky to be a bridesmaid and she said "sure"-
The blankets and Dishes sound swell - and I would like to see them?  -Goodness yes, we can always use dishes - They sound awfully pretty -
Am starting to try to sell my car tonite but I just seem to kinda hate to tackle the job-
And am I ever getting excited! - Can't think of anything else at all -  Guess I best settle down for a little while longer tho -
Guess what?  - Cadle's in Alaska - Yep - Ruth Saw Jean today who said he left yesterday.  Fine thing!-
Gosh, can't even think of anything to write to you -
Ruth came over Sunday for a little while and we went for a ride -  I really picked up a nice tan, too, but it's already beginning to fade-
P.S. I don't have enough invitations now to finish up and I'm sure having a heck of a time trying to figure out who to eliminate -
     Goodbye now -
Have you found out yet whether Wava is coming down with you?!
                           All my love,
                                      Dotty-

                                                                                                    Tuesday

Hi, dear,
Don't fall over in a faint, but I actually have all the addresses you asked for, to wit:
     Mrs. Edith Eigner
     1123 S.W. Whitaker, Apt 1
     Portland, Oregon
____________________________
     Miss Beatrice Evans
     Box 474
     Gold Hill, Oregon
_____________
     Miss Josephine Evans
     Box 31
     Rainier, Oregon
________
     Private George Palmer
     C.A.S.V. #1932
     Fort Scott, California
____________
     Lt. Dean A. Cadle
     Air Corps Advanced Flying School
     Stockton, California
Please Forward  (think he has since been transferred)

So I hope that takes care of that.  I am going to write Tony tonite and find out whether he can come up, although I doubt it on account of that is quite a ways.  Wonder why he was transferred.
Got a letter from Karl today and he asks whether it would be all right if he doesn't get there till late Saturday nite or early Sunday, as he might have to work Saturday noon, since he is taking Monday off.  So it looks as though there may be a little difficulty yet in getting all these ushers rounded up.
Called up Mr. Byrne today to find out about going to the coast this weekend, and now things are complicated, so I'll tell you the situation and we'll try to figure it out between now and then.  Anyway, it seems that Mrs. Byrne and the children can't go down this weekend, so Mr. Byrne is making a bachelor party, as he calls it, out of the affair.  So he is leaving Saturday noon, and if I go down with him, you'll have to stay in Eugene -  Would you like that, sweet?  I wouldn't either.  Otherwise there is another possibility: You and I would go down early Sunday morning, stick around for a few hours and then go back to Eugene.  That wouldn't be so bad, except that I would have to do about 300 miles of driving Sunday before I finally got back to Portland.  Of course I could wait until early Monday morning before going back to Portland, but I think it would be better to get Wava back to Portland Sunday nite.  Oh, yes.  I called up your Aunt Edna and she says it is OK for Wava to go down.
Anyway, Mr. Byrne wants to show me how a few things work down there, so it looks as though we'll have to go down, although it won't be as much fun if we don't go down till Sunday.
Called up Marge today about the veil, so I am going to pick it up Friday and bring it down.
I told your Aunt Edna I would be by for Wava about 5 o'clock Friday, so I should be in Eugene around 8:00 or thereabouts.  So we should have time to go to Kay Kyser, providing I am not broke by then.
Maybe you better call up the marriage license bureau and find out if they are open Saturday morning, although I don't see why not.  Anyway, that should be an experience worth remembering.
And now it is only 19 days.  And when I see you Friday it'll only be 16 - oh happy day.
                                                                                        Love and kisses -
                                                                                                   Bill

March 24, 1941 Monday "...I have received a couple of gifts for us already - from my dad and sister."

                                                                                          Monday

Hello, sweet -
Guess what - I am working late tonite.  Have just had dinner at the hospital with Mr Couch and he has gone to another meeting and won't be back for 45 minutes or thereabouts, so thought I'd write you while I was waiting - although we may not get through in time for me to mail this tonite -
Well, dear, I have received a couple of gifts for us already - from my dad and sister.  I told you Lydia was getting us a blanket, and it is pretty nice, being a rose-colored affair and very soft, also plenty large.  If you want me to, I'll bring it down this weekend and show you.  And guess what my dad and step-mother bought us - a 50 piece set of dishes - I kinda wished they'd asked us first, but I think it's all right, because they are pretty and should make a nice in-between set for our pottery and our Priscilla.  Anyway, these have a bright flowered pattern around the edges, mostly in blue with a little yellow and red.  I'll bring down a plate and a cup Friday and let you see them.  The set has a big platter and a sugar bowl and cream pitcher too -
Haven't got Mrs. Eigner's address yet although have found out her first name is Edith.  Will get the other tomorrow if I have to go up and look at the no. myself.  And can't seem to get Mr. Sargent's name and address so let's just skip him, on account of Miss Granberg should remember to bring him anyway.  After all, I didn't get an invitation to Marge's and Paul's wedding, or to D.J's either, so it should be all right - Instead, let's send the invitation to Dr. James Conant, University State Tuberculosis Hospital, Portland.
Golly, the time is really getting short now isn't it.  My little old calendar says 20 days - You know, down deep inside I think I am pretty excited about it, but I guess you know that don't you.  It gets more wonderful every time I think about it - or rather, everytime I think about you.  Hope the days go by fast, and hope this week goes by fast.  We are going to have a lot to talk about this weekend, too, I betcha.  Haven't got a definite answer from Von yet as to whether he can be present at the wedding, but he has promised to let me know for sure before the end of the week.  As for Tony I haven't heard so maybe I had best start looking for someone else.
How are you coming along with your efforts to sell the little old '31 Ford with V-8 wheels which is in excellent condition, you hope.
Also, keep me posted on the silver shower - it will really be swell if we get a few more pieces to add to our present set of two.
Think Mr. Couch is about to put in an appearance so g'bye now, sweet - and hope you keep on writing me as much as you did last week.
                                                                      All my love,
                                                                               Bill

March 23, 1941 Sunday " This afternoon I am going to take the family down to Salem to visit my sister..."

                                                                                          Sunday

Hello, sweet -
I am glad too that this is our last weekend apart - they just don't seem the same without you.
Anyway, I got my car all polished up yesterday afternoon and it took me about 4 hours.  I was a little tired afterwards too - guess I'm not in the best of shape yet.  And this morning my shoulders are really stiff - in fact I was going to play a little golf but have called that off.
The weather really turned out swell today - maybe spring is here to stay, I hope.  This afternoon I am going to take the family down to Salem to visit my sister, so we should have a nice trip.
Had lunch with Von yesterday - He doesn't like Seattle at all and says he has yet to see a pretty girl up there - maybe he is too critical - He still isn't sure whether he can get down to Eugene by the nite of the 12th but I'm not worrying too much about that.  I'm going to call him a little later and get him to promise me definitely before the end of the week.
I have written Karl about the addresses of Bea and Jo and Cadle, so should have those before long.  It's kinda tough getting the names and addresses of Sargent and Mrs. Eigner but I should succeed by tomorrow, I hope.
I'll call up your Aunt Edna and Marge tomorrow and see what they say.  And Tuesday I'll get in touch with Br. Byrne, and if everything goes according to schedule we ought to have a pretty swell weekend, if it doesn't rain or something.
Went down to the local movie last night and saw "the Lady Eve" - good show - and do you know, dear, that's the first money I've spent all week, aren't you proud of me -  I can really save if I have to, and now is a good time.  Tonite however I am going out and buy me a big dinner, but that will be the extent of my spending for a while-
Miss Langoe left for San Francisco last nite - she is getting married Friday nite - and I gave her our address, so I wouldn't be surprised if we heard from her before long.
Golly, did I ever have some wild dreams last nite - and one or two were about you too - first dreams I've had in some time.  Maybe it was something I et.
Listen, sweet, it would be real nice of you to pack up a few things for me to use when I'm in the apartment from the 1st to the 13th of April.  I probably won't be doing much cooking, but think I could get breakfasts and lunches there O.K.   So could you figure out what I would need in the way of dishes, etc. and I'll bring them back with me this weekend.  I'll also need a sheet or two, I suppose-
Could be that I'll lose a pound or two while I'm there alone, but should gain it back pretty fast after you start doing the cooking, don't you think -
And remember, dear, this is the week you are going to sell your car.
                                                                                  Love,
                                                                                             Bill

                                                                                Sunday -

Guess where I am - yep in the back yard with "Old Man Sol" and thinking of you and writing to you - It has really been a beautiful day today - Just think! only two more weekends - if you only knew how happy I am -
What have you been doing today?  You know - for the first time today I just wondered what you did do when I wasn't around -
Opened my dime bank and there was $4.60 which guess I'll put in the bank - Am sorta going over my budget but I don't care - am having lots of fun -
P.S- I'm getting a pretty good tan?- Winkie and Ann visited me for quite a while this afternoon - We planted flowers and everything - They are sure a couple of cute kids -
There have been a lot of planes flying around today - Guess a lot of the boys are getting their hours in -
Thot I had lots to say to you - but guess I can't remember it - I sure am anxious to see our apartment - And even more anxious to move in - But it won't be long now-  Hope next weekend is as nice as this - Don't forget to call Aunt Edna to see if Wava can come - It's very important that she does come - Her dress is sure going to be cute -
Cheero, my pet, and think of me now and then -
                                                                                    Love
                                                                                           Dotty

March 21, 1941 Friday

                                          Friday

Hello, hello, hello -
I'm sure glad that this is to be our last weekend apart - And it's going to be a long dreary one - Guess what I'm doing?- I'm typing all the lessons for Con. Eng. Novel so I can return M.J.'s lesson to her - Then all I will have to do is to read the books and hand in the lessons - But it's sure a job now and I'm getting tired of typing, typing, typing -
Listen, dear, I have an invitation all addressed, stamped and sealed for Bob Moser, so don't give him another one - Use one of the two I sent for the Boarding House - But save the other - We might need it -
Looks like it's going to be a silver wedding for us - Helen's giving me a shower next Wed. and that is to be the gifts - Then Mrs. Moxley - Dow's mother - wanted us to get silver with what she left for us - Isn't it wonderful!  - At that rate we'll have a set in no time  and something to treasure all the rest of our life -
Next weekend will sure be a full one for us - And my pet - don't forget Wava- the trunk and Marge's veil -
Will do my last bit of purchasing tomorrow - Hope the weather is nice - Then I'm all through for a while, I hope - cause I've spent just about enough money - don't you think! -
It's all very quiet and peaceful around here - And I've sure been getting a lot of sleep lately - Wish you were here -
My rug's still sitting on the table but I'm going to ask the cleaners tomorrow about dyeing a piece of material - and not charge too much for it -
Nothing new is happening at the front - Have a few ( ) more things ready for you to take back with you and will probably have more by next weekend -
                                         Je t'aime beaucoux -
                                                         Dotty

                                                                                    Friday

Greetings, sweet -
Thanks for the invitations - I think they look swell, even though they are a bit large - should I give one to Bob Moser or are you going to send him one - also, what do the reception cards look like - and when are you sending out all of these -
Am glad to hear everything is going so smoothly and I hope you don't find anything to have to worry about - honestly, sweet, I can hardly believe that in three short weeks we'll be married - it's really a wonderful feeling.  And it's sure a lot of fun thinking about it and everything -
Wandered up to our little apartment this noon - the more I see of it the more I like it, only I wish it weren't quite so small- don't know where we're going to put all your furniture but I'll let you worry about that - By the way, you're still planning on coming up here the 6th or thereabouts, aren't you -
How are you coming along with your campaign to sell your car - think you better do a little intensive work about the first of the week on this little matter - and I hope you succeed in selling it O.K. - after all we can use all the cash we can get for a while, don't you think -
You should see me now, dear.  Went down today and had the shortest haircut I've ever had - the hair isn't more than an inch long anywhere - in fact, it looks the same if I comb it forward instead of back, but  it'll be all right in a day or so.
Wish I were coming down to Eugene again this weekend but I guess I can't have everything - that is - not until April 13 anyway.  But have an idea the days are going to go pretty fast from now on - and I hope the spring weather lasts for a few more weeks.
                                                                                         Love and kisses,
                                                                                                     Bill

March 20, 1941 Thursday "and remember to invite everyone - the ushers and Ed to dinner so we can have the practice -"

                                                                                       Thursday

Hello, sweet -
Just think - April 13 is only 23 days away now - Every morning the first thing I do at the office is turn over the calendar pad and subtract the no. of days - it's sure fun - and the day can't come too soon for me, or do you know that already -
Am glad to hear you are getting the invitations addressed - I'll try to get those addresses; will probably have to write Karl to get Bea's and Jo's addresses - so it will be a little while yet - and will get Mrs. Eigner's and Sargent's tomorrow -
By the way, sweet, don't forget to send me a couple invitations - thought I'd give Bob Moser one and keep one - Von is coming down this weekend so I'll see him and find out for sure when he can get down to Eugene - Got a card from Ed today saying he wouldn't be going to Washington for a while yet and that he would be in Eugene for sure -
Didn't work much this afternoon - listened to a couple of lectures, one on medicine and one about surgery - by gosh, I might learn something about all this yet, although they certainly use the big words.
Am going to call Mr. Byrne when he gets into Portland about Sunday nite and find out what time he is going down to the coast on the 29th - that ought to be a lot of fun that weekend if we go to Kay Kyser, go to the coast, and also make application for a marriage license -
Hope it doesn't rain this weekend on account of I would like to get my car all polished up for April - won't have any time to do it then -
And this weekend, sweet, will be the last one we spend apart - are you glad!
                                                                                               Love,
                                                                                                   Bill

Hello my puddin -
I'm not worrying a bit about things - In fact I'm thrilled to death and happier than a lark - I got the sweetest letters today from Aunt Edna and Marge -  A.E. feels about the same way I do about Ruth and Betty - Also she says you can bring the little trunk down with you next time -  I'm writing her tonight about Wava's coming up - and said you could call her - The number is East 3443 or 4334 or if not those two ask information for the telephone number at 3923 S.E. Taylor -
Also I've asked Marge about the veil so can you call her and ask when you can pick it up?-
I'm sending the two invits. - But what do you want with them -
They're no enclosure cards with these two cause I'm running low -  It's swell about Ed and I sure think he's a peach - I've already addressed his invitation - Will he get it anyway - or should I try to change it - we may have enough extras - but I'm not sure -
Oh yes, Tony is in Calif. now - according to Keith so hope you hear from him soon - and remember to invite everyone - the ushers and Ed to dinner so we can have the practice -
Called Dr. Wirt and it's O.K. about the church  - In fact don't think I needed to call cause all he said was yup- fine O.K.-
Glad you found out about the license - It will be fun to go together -  Almost finished another dish cloth last night - And have more wonderful ideas about the apartment only can't use them all - so have to figure out which ones are best - oh happy day -
I sent you the names for addresses yesterday - so don't forget them -
Am going for another fitting on my dress tonight - it's sure cute and my suit is going to be a honey -
     Goodby now my love -
                                                                              Dotty

March 19, 1941 Wednesday

                                                                                       Wednesday

Hello, dear,
Was glad to hear you have received the invitations, and I am anxious to see them - so would you send me a couple of them - you'll probably have to put them in a big envelope or something, if they're as big as you say they are -
Hope you're not doing any worrying about the usher and best man situation, on account of its practically taken care of.  Received a letter from Ed today and he says "Yes", so that takes care of the best man, and he also said he would be in Eugene at least by Friday nite the 11th, which is all right too.  And Bob Moser was only too happy to be an usher; and I know Von and Wester will be there, so that only leaves one more usher to go, and I am waiting now to hear from Tony, who has already accepted, but he still has to find out when he can get away from camp.
Ed's letter was rather interesting - It seems as though he has been recommended for a fairly good postion with the Social Security Board in Washington D.C. - he is getting about $250 a month now and this new job would be at more than that, so it must be good - anyway he isn't sure if and when he is going now, as the Defense Program is messing things up, but he says if they want him before April, he is going to tell them that for private reasons he can't go till later - so he'll be at our wedding for sure -
By the way, he has a new address - so mark it down:  1522 13th, Sacramento.  Am going to another lecture tonite at the Medical School - they changed the title of the one last nite from cancer to appendicitis, so I understood more of it - do't know how I'll do tonite -
By the way, our Portland address after April 20th will be 3317 S.W. 11th, Apt. 5 - and don't forget the no. of the apt. as there are 6 of them.
Had a few idle moments today, so I called up the Marriage License Bureau at the Court House and secured the necessary information.  It seems to be a fairly simple procedure, provided we get started in time.  So let's plan on making application the morning of the 29th when I come down, although if you want to, we can get the forms sooner, on account of it only takes one of us to make the application.  However, I think we will have time if wait till the 29th and it will be more fun if we go down together - don't you think?
How much is the admission for Kay Kyser in Eugene - thought we might go if it's not too much -
Oh, yes, I assume you are taking care of writing your Aunt Edna about me taking Wava down the 28th - also that you are fixing it up with Marge so I will bring the veil down too -
Don't remember what addresses I am still supposed to get, so please let me know which are still missing and I'll see what I can do -
                                                                   Love,
                                                                         Bill

                                                                                          Wednesday -

Hello, again, puddin-
Today is Wed. already - Do you know, I have practically all the invitations addressed - and have even mailed a few - and I'd be very, very happy if they only weren't so big -
Have continued cleaning out my things - sorted your letters and now have them all arranged by date and tucked away neatly in a box - There really aren't as many as I thought!! -
Just how big is the storeroom that we have? - Course we really won't have a lot to put in it - Aunt Edna will take her trunk and use it - Oh joy - wish it were time to move now!-
Guess I'll crochet another dish cloth tonight -
I'll try to remember to call D.J. tomorrow and find out about the license - I was going to call Dr. Wirt tonight but I forgot so I'll call him tomorrow too and, dear what song would you especially like to have Fred sing? -  I should decide and let him know.  And don't forget, sweet, to line up the ushers and invite them to dinner before the practice - If you get the ties or whatever you're going to get,  I'll wrap them up - I've already wrapped my things - They look so pretty!-
Here I go again but don't forget the addresses I need -
                  Mrs. Eigner
                  Bee & Jo Evans
                  Sargent
                  Cadle -
and any others -

Have pulled out my English Novel papers and am going to copy M.J.'s -  Then when I start in again I can just hand in the papers at intervals - Oh happy day -
Glad you got home O.K. - I dream't you kissed me goodbye - you didn't did you?!  -  I was sort of half awake when you left. -
Wow - have I ever used up stamps on these invitations - They've gone like wildfire -
Will you decide what you'll need while you're in the apartment alone & Mom and I'll fix you up - we can give you dishes etc. - Will you do much cooking?
Goodbye now, dear, and remember? -
                                                                          I love you
                                                                                  Dotty

March 18, 1941 Tuesday "Got the invitations today..."

                                                                            Monday

Dearest -
Yep, I miss you already - Got the invitations today and have already addressed quite a few of them - Only they sent me a different size than I ordered - In fact they're twice as big - but they're all right - only they are big -
Did you get home all right - I did wake up about 4 - couldn't see my watch - but didn't hear the alarm - then you were up and around - Only I didn't completely wake up - Mom says you were real quiet - I hope you don't have to work real late tonight - certainly wasn't very ambitious working today -
I hope you get the ushers lined up O.K. and be sure to tell them about the dinner before-hand - shall we say 6:00 - that means we'll get started about 6:30 or 6:45 which means the practice will start about 7:30 or 7:45 -
P.S. - Don't forget the addresses - and if you think of any others send them along -
Sorry, dear, can't seem to think of much to say - Maybe something exciting will happen tomorrow -
You might send me our future address, too -
                                                  All my love
                                                      Dotty

                                                                                       Tuesday

Hello sweet -
How have you been since Sunday.  Guess you were still asleep when I left yesterday morning - I woke up before the alarm went off - had a quick trip to Portland, getting here about 7:30 and I even stopped in Oregon City for coffee and donuts on account of I was getting pretty hungry.
Worked till about 9:00 last nite so it was a long day, but I was in bed before 10 PM - so today I am back to normal.
It has really been raining since about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon - guess spring is going to take a little recess - this is the first time it ever started raining on Monday; it's usually Saturday -
Tonite and tomorrow nite I am going to listen to a couple of lectures in connection with the post graduate course.  Mr. Couch thought I ought to take them in and get a little more knowledge about the profession of medicine.  The subject of tonight's lecture is the Diagnosis of Cancer of the Breast and its Surgical Treatment so you can see that I don't know anything about it either -
Has anything new developed in connection with the wedding - Hope you get the invitations this week and I want you to send me a couple when you get them too - And you better call up the minister this week too - and sometime between now and the 29th could you check up on the procedure for making application for a marriage license - maybe we could get it then on the 29th - I hope - and then afterwards we can have lunch with champagne - remember!!
Have all your boxes and skis moved into the apartment - so you can start fixing up another load for me to bring up next time - there's still lots of room in the apartment even if it is small -
                                                                               Love and kisses,
                                                                                  Bill

March 13, 1941 Thursday "..today is the last 13th to go by before we start celebrating anniversaries"

                                                                                    Thursday

Hello, dear -
This week is going by altogether too slow for me - maybe it's because I haven't been too busy - the hardest work I've done all week is trying to see Mr Couch - he's just too busy -
Have about 3 passengers going down Saturday, but they all are buying one-way tickets so it looks as though I'll be driving back up alone - In that event I may wait until early Monday morning before starting out -
Mr. Couch had a little car trouble coming up from S.F, so the first thing he did when he got back was to trade in his Dodge - and guess what - he got a new Chevrolet - so they must be good as he has had Dodges for the last six or eight years -
And speaking of cars, I find that mine is worth $400 on a trade-in right now, so I guess it's not depreciating too rapidly -
And still speaking about cars, how are you coming with your plans for selling yours - hope that a purchaser with lots of cash comes along -
Well, today is the last 13th to go by before we start celebrating anniversaries - and honestly, sweet, I can hardly wait - it just makes me feel good all over every time I think about it - and you -
I hope we can get an early start Saturday, but it will probably be around noon or thereabouts, so expect me about the usual time - somewhere between 3 and 4.
I am going up tomorrow and survey our apartment - the people are moving out today so I'll get the keys and everything and will be all set to start moving in -
                       See you Saturday -
                                                                   Love and kisses,
                                                                                   Bill

March 12, 1941 Wednesday

                                                                                  Wednesday

Hi, sweet -
Have been having quite a time today making arrangements to get the apartment, but it is in the bag now for keeps definitely - Things got a little complicated when the people who are in it now wanted to get somebody to take it over from the 15th of this month till the 15th of April, so that they would save half of the $35 rent they had paid for March.  I of course didn't want that, because of it being a good idea for me to move in the 1st and get things fixed up - So in order to save a lot of argument and trouble, I finally ended up paying $8.75 - and so, I can now move in the apartment anytime after this Friday - but I am all paid up here till the 1st, so the apartment will be vacant until the first - but we can start moving things in whenever we want to - so if you want to you can start getting things together and I'll take them up this weekend.  I am still a little mad about having to pay the extra $8.75, but it was worth it to make sure of getting the apartment - And Mrs. Gallegly is still stalling on the refund of the $5 deposit - so I am fast becoming broke - but that's life, isn't it?
Don't worry about the closet space or the bed in the apartment - it's really pretty smooth - so just wait till you see it - and the dinette is by the kitchen window - but I won't tell you any more - you'll just have to see it to believe how perfect it is -
I'll try to get together all these addresses and bring them down this weekend - So take it easy and I'll see you Saturday-
                                                                                     Love & kisses,
                                                                                               Bill

March 11, 1941 Tuesday

                                                                                   Tuesday

Hello, dear -
Hope my letter of yesterday cheered you up a little - you sound as though you had been having a few bad moments lately - but just start thinking about our new apartment, sweet, and you won't be mad at any body -
Guess what - dear - I am coming down to see you this weekend.  Are you glad?  Then I won't be down again until the 29th, which means a two-week interval, but it's the last one -
Thanks for sending me Mr Byrne's address, but I didn't have to use it, on account of he called me up today and we had quite a nice talk - So, it seems as though we are going to the coast (for the first time) on March 29th - Mr. Byrne is going to be busy the next two weekends, so he won't be going down until then - Hope the weather is good -
I am glad you like my relatives - dear - And I am sure my dad and sister will be down for the wedding, but no one else -
And I have decided that I want to send invitations to Miss Granberg and Mrs. Sargent for sure - So this weekend we can go over the whole list and get it all settled for keeps -
It's a good thing you are saving my $6 for me, cause I'm sure going to need it - Mrs Gallegly hasn't given my my $5 back yet and it's got me worried - also there is a possibility I may have to put a larger deposit on the new apartment, as it seems to be in demand, but I'll take care of that tomorrow -
I certainly haven't been working very hard lately - Mr Couch hasn't come back to the office yet, and I'm all caught up in my work, but it's only temporary, I hope -
                                                                                         Love,
                                                                                            Bill

                                                                                   Tuesday

Darlin' -
That was a wonderful piece of news - I guess we're just two lucky kids - I'm really thrilled about the whole thing - And here I'd figured out how to fix up the other apartment - Well - now I can start all over again-  But it'll be more fun - Is there room in one of the closets for a chest of drawers?  - Is it sort of a dressing Room?  Or what - Also - you still have the job of pulling the bed out - it looks as if it were at an odd angle - Is the dinette by the kitchen window?  -  Guess I'll go to the Alum meeting tonight so will whip this letter out in a hurry -
Am going to write Marge tomorrow night and ask her about the veil - Then maybe you can bring it down when you come -
Also here are a few more addresses to check on - well one anyway - Mrs. Eigner's - Isn't in the Portland phone book - And what is Miss Granberg's initials or first name -
And don't forget Cadel's and ask for Bea's & Jo's  - And Bob Henderson's and others you can think of -
Went to bed a 8:45 last night and feel better today -
When will you move in this apt? -
     Goobye dear -
                                                         All my love

March 10, 1941 Monday "..cross Marquam Manor off the list and we'll forget about that for keeps"

(Don't faint - it's only 8 pages)                                             Monday

Hello sweet -
Do you like surprises!!  I hope -
Because I have the most pleasant one in a long time - just for you -  You could never guess, so here it is - we have a new apartment!!!!  so just cross Marquam Manor off the list and we'll forget about that for keeps -  Here's what happened :  Miss Howser called me up today and told me that the salesman and his wife were going to Los Angeles, on account of being transferred or something, and would I like to take the apartment - I sure didn't lose much time in saying yes - so I went up and saw it this noon and cinched the deal by paying a $5 deposit and getting a receipt and everything - isn't it wonderful -
Oh, yes, I had to make the necessary explanations to Mrs. Gallegly over at Marquam Manor - I tried to be real smooth about it because it would be bad cutting her off at the pockets, so to speak - but it looks as though I will get my $5 back from her, on account of she rented the apartment while I was there - everything worked out swell - so I should get my deposit back tomorrow -
Honestly, Dotty, I can't wait to have you see this apartment - it is just perfect - you remember that we looked at the front apartment when you were here - well, this one is even better than that - I have drawn a rough sketch showing where it is - it is No. 5, right at the back corner - and I certainly believed Miss Howser  when she told me it is the nicest one of them all - I'll try to describe it to you, although I can't do justice to it - you'll have to see it to believe it - but here goes, and I'll give it to you point by point:
First of all, it is brand new - rugs, furniture, everything - and it just shines - and it's light and airy with lots of ventilation and sunshine.  It's very roomy, too, and it looks larger than it is - the arrangement is swell.  The rug is beautiful; a maroon with a slight design - think it has a little yellow and blue in it - The davenport is a great big blue thing (light blue) that folds out - in fact the people who are there now have been using it to sleep on rather than the regular bed.  Then there is a marvelous floor lamp and a couple little end tables and stuff; also a wall mirror; and of course, venetian blinds.  And the floor is a beautiful hardwood that just sparkles.
The kitchen is great - you should see the stove - a big electric range with all the gadgets, such as a broiler, a steam-cooker, and a little timer that rings a bell when things are done - big oven, too, and it's very good looking, - all white -
Have a big Frigidaire and you'll just love that too - and the sink is really smooth -  Also the kitchen has a door and a window, besides a ventilating fan, so there'll be lots of air in there -   The dinette set is nice, what with four chairs with padded seats and a table with a couple of extra leaves -
The bathroom has a bath - no shower - but there is a shower downstairs if we feel like we need one - and it has a window opening on the west, I guess - and you remember the beautiful mirror, with the lights down the side - couldn't be better.
Honestly, sweet, we couldn't find a nicer apartment anywhere - it's at least a thousand times better than Marquam Manor - and, after I told Vada about it this afternoon, she got so enthusiastic she called up Miss Howser and had herself put on the waiting list - there might be another one vacant by June or thereabouts, so we might have the Aumanns as neighbors there -
Oh, yes, must tell you about the other features - the basement is swell, being on the south side with lots of windows and sunshine - it's all concrete - have good laundry facilities with 4 basins and a new washing machine - and storage space, it couldn't be better - we have a little room that we can put our stuff in and lock it - everyone has private compartments - so there'll be lots of room for your bed and just about everything else we have -
There is a smooth little deal to take care of the garbage - right outside the kitchen door; just dump it in and forget about it - it will be hauled away.
Oh yes, the price of all this is $35 and our lights, so that is just right - If we think we need it, we can have a telephone put in, but there's no hurry - Miss Howser said we could use her phone if we had any important calls to make -
Just thought of another feature - have a beautiful set of chimes for a doorbell - and guess I didn't tell you about the bed, which I think we will use instead of the sofa - It is brand new and has some gorgeous springs - and it looks as though it rolls pretty easily -
Well, dear, I guess that covers it - this is getting to be rather a long letter but I kinda thought you would be interested - certainly wish you could see it - you'll just have to come back with me the 5th and take a look at it -
Almost forgot something else about the place - we have lots of closet space - don't know where they get it but it's there -
So, my love, outside of the above, little happened today - Mr. Couch didn't get back to the office - there was a rumor around that he had a little car trouble down by Klamath Falls, but it's nothing serious -
Hope you weren't too sleepy today - I was a bad boy keeping you out so late Sat. and Sunday, but I can't help it - and it was lots of fun, wasn't it -
Have a couple more addresses for your invitations:
                             Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gertz
                             9238 N. New York Ave
                             Portland, Oregon
(that's where we were yesterday -)
 Also
                             Mr. and Mrs. J.C.F. Merrifield
                             3233 S.E. Claybourne
                             Portland, Oregon
Also you can get the Strawn's address from Clifford Constance - so why don't you see him and find out -
I called up Mr. Byrne today - on business - but they said he was in Portland so I think I'll try to call him up if I can locate him - Hope he wants to go this weekend -
                                                                             Love and kisses,
                                                                                         Bill

There, that's that before I forget it - And I'm sure in a "hell of a mood" - Guess it's cause I'm not with you - I can be civil to Mom for a half hour and then she starts getting on my nerves and then I get mad at me cause I feel that way, and oh happy day - it's a great life - And then there's no heat - and I've got an headache - But I feel better already - after letting off some steam-  Do you mind if I rave on to you -
Got my check today - but $15.00 in the bank - $6.00 in my bank book (for you) - and after I pay my income tax won't have a thing left - Oh happy day -
The train wasn't half bad last night - It was nice and clean - The people were all quiet and nice - Got a pillow - and dozed off - but didn't go to sleep completely - We left Portland right on the nose at 9:40 and got in Eugene exactly at 12:53 - pretty good goin' I'd say - Ive got our apartment all fixed up in my mind's eye now, for sure - and can hardly wait to start fixing it up, - But will have to wait till we're all moved in and then it'll take a couple of days - I've got some good ideas (I think) And I do hope they'll work out allright-
Now I'm going to get busy to try to sell my car and get that off my mind -
Bill, dear, I do like your folks and I think you're dad is awful cute - Can't he come up for the wedding - I bet he'd like to - wouldn't he?-
Wasn't so good working today - Just couldn't seem to get anything done - But I'm going to bed early tonight and sleep it off -
Guess I've rambled on enough - And hope you can come up this week-end - but save your pennies, too, cause we will need them -
                                                                          All my love,
                                                                              Dotty

                                                                                      Wednesday-

Halloo - my sweet -
Yup, altho I've been expecting it, I was frankly disappointed about the apartment news -  But we can make the best of it for a while - but I don't like the idea too much of living in the "Manor" -
Mr. Merrifield came last night and filled out an application -  He really is a nice fellow - and quite a talker - Guess my policy's all set - He is going to visit us some time when we are settled and explain the policy to us -
Guess Karl isn't coming to Portland after all - but I still am - And I'm still leaving here at 4:00 - so don't forget to meet me - Would you call Aunt Vesta for me & ask her if I can stay there?
Sorry, dear, but I can't seem to think of a lot to say - except that today's Wed. already -
The time is going by fairly fast, yet I don't seem to be accomplishing much -  Got awful sleepy this afternoon - guess I'm just about getting too much sleep -
Saw Bucky last night and she'll be tickled to death to help with the serving - That makes two so far - haven't asked the others yet - She wanted to know was the punch going to be spiked!
Au revoir, sweet -
                                                  All my love
                                                          Dotty

                                                                                     Thursday

Hello, dear -
Just had an idea today - as long as you are going to come up to Portland by Saturday morning why don't you take the 6:00 bus from Eugene Friday nite instead of waiting to take the Saturday morning train - That way we can have a couple of hours together tomorrow nite and also you can end up getting more sleep than if you stayed in Eugene and got up in the middle of the nite Saturday morning - So why not consider doing this, sweet -  And if you do, I'll be here tomorrow nite and you can call me as soon as you get here - All in all, I really think it's not a bad idea at all - don't you think -
Mr. Couch will probably sta.y a couple of extra days in San Francisco, and in the meanwhile I'm really catching up - Maybe by Saturday I can take a couple of hours off and go shopping with you, or something -
By the way, will you bring me Mr. Byrne's address in Eugene - I want to write him a letter about the first of the week - thank you, sweet - and don't forget -
They had quite a fire in Portland this morning - practically destroyed Burnett's Automotive City - that's where you bought your car, remember?
I guess I told you the staff at the Medical School took up a collection to buy Miss Langoe a wedding present, and the response was certainly swell - About $100 was collected and so now she is the proud possessor of a service for six of sterling, and is she thrilled!!  Oh yes, and Dean Dillehunt made the set complete by buying the carving knife and fork to match -
I'll be seeing you tomorrow nite, I hope -

                                                                           Love and kisses,
                                                                                     Bill
