September 4, 1940 Wednesday

Hello, Sweetness--

Today has been a funny day.  Have been in a sort of a daze or haze all day long.  Hope you got my letter O.K.  And hope I get one from you when I get home tonight.  Got some awful pretty material this noon to start embroidering on.  Now I probably won't have time to do it, but I will take time.  Finished my book last night and now all I have to do is to copy Mary Jane's review of it.

Ruth May called a little while ago and guess I will go out and play cards with the "girls" tonight.  Better than just staying home and staying sitting around.  Also it feels and looks like it is going to rain any minute.  Haven't much really to say.  I'm beginning to get hungry now.  When I got home for lunch I didn't feel like eating, so didn't.  Mome went to Salem today to the fair with Aunt Hetty and Uncle Dow.  She was all excited today.

Please excuse this awful mess of a letter, but I do keep thinking of you all the time and wish you were here.

                                                                               Lots of love,
                                                                                    Dotty

                                                                        Wednesday

Hello, sweet -

It was very nice having a letter from you today and I am happy to hear you miss me already -  the feeling is mutual, I guess - it's certainly going to be a long time until a week from Saturday - dammit-
Which reminds me - I am glad to hear the car is running better with the change of tires - you know I really worked just awful hard fixing them - or did I - but it was lots of fun -
Have been doing a little work since Mr. Couch came back, but it makes the hours go by a little faster -
Had a pleasant surprise this afternoon -  Miss Phelps, the Superintendent of Doernbecher Hospital, came into my office with a piece of cherry pie and a glass of milk and says "Have some" - it really tasted good - guess I am beginning to rate around the place -
Also I bought 20 stamps today - all for you - aren't you proud?
Have a suggestion about all your reading you are going to do this winter - if the English novels get too dry you might take out a book on how to play golf - it probably wouldn't be dry but it is deep - I know -
The weather up here is really getting bad - I guess maybe the rainy season has set in and I don't like it - darn it - these summer months go much too fast - but I am really looking forward to next summer already too -
In a spare moment today I glanced at the calendar and noticed that of the last nine weekends, I have been in Eugene 6 of them, you have been in Portland 1, we have been in Seaside 1, and the other wasn't as much fun as the others -
My skis look pretty smooth now that they're all tied up - hope I get to use them a few times this winter - but it's hard on the budget -
It is really pouring down outside now, but I think I will go out in it to mail this letter - wish you were here as it is lots of fun walking around in the rain with you - remember -
                                                         Love and kisses,
                                                                Bill
