October 30, 1940 Wednesday "My number was the 5388th drawn back in D.C. "

                                                                             Wednesday

Willy, dear--

I didn't write last night--do you forgive me?  I thought and thought about you, but you should see how lazy I have gotten in the last week.  Just sit and sit and think and don't do a thing.  Gotta snap out of it--
I can hardly wait till you come up the 9th--what with three days, we should have loads and loads of fun.  And then, too, I want you to come up for the 16th.  It's going to be a good dance and we don't want to miss it.  I don't know yet whether we have to work Monday or not--but probably not, I hope.  We haven't been at all busy during the last week.
Thank goodness tomorrow is pay day only I am going to wait till Monday, then I will get a little larger check, although next month's won't be so big then.  I'm so proud, bit by bit I'M getting all my debts paid up.  Put my dimes in the bank yesterday, decided that would be the best place for them--$5.00 worth, which makes a total of $5.70 now in the bank.  And I'm sure going to raise that amount in a hurry if I have anything to say about it.

I looked and looked in the paper last night and your number wasn't there so far, and I hope it's the very last one on the list.  Or I would be happy if they just forgot about it.  Anyway I'm sure holding my breath.  Mr. Eberdt's was there and Laddie Gale's was the very first number drawn.  He got his picture in the paper and everythin'.
Placed bridge (that is played at it) Monday night with two of your fraternity brothers--Al Lynn and Frank somebody.  Al wanted to know how you were getting along and things.  So I told him you were fine and were coming down for Homecoming.  He said "good".  I have decided definitely to withdraw from school, only I don't know when I'm going to get the time to even do that.  Today I have to take my car back and give them "H" cause there are more noises now than there were before I supposedly had it fixed.  Maybe I will find time to do it either Thursday or Friday.  Oh yes, Veneta Brous was married to Kenneth Larson in Seattle a couple weeks ago, so I have to buy her a present.  If I were in Portland this weekend we could go to their reception which is going to be in the Pompeiian room of the Congress Hotel, or some such place.  Hope the time goes by awful fast between now and the 9th--it had just better cause I'll be unhappy if it doesn't.
Am going over to Helen's tonight for a while, but I finished my embroidery, so don't know what we will do.  Probably just talk and bum around.  We might even go down town and get a Coc.  And then of course she will talk about Lloyd and I will talk about Bill--Bet you and Lloyd would get a bang out of us if you could hear us.
For our G.A.C. dance don't you think it would be fun if I could sell Francis, Ruthie, and Dotty a ticket, then we could all go together.  Anyway there are a couple of weeks yet till then.  But it's an idea.  We were talking over the decoration and whatnot last night, and I think they are going to be very nice.
Carl hasn't called me up again to give me your love.  Guess he thinks I got a letter from you by now; which of course is so.  I didn't know that you have to be put on a waiting list to get an apartment in Marquam Manor--are you sure that is what you want to do, cause how much is the rent and then you will just have to take one whether you like it or not, or just how does it work?  (Goodbye for now while I write an order for the plant, but I'll be back.)
Hello, again, but best I sign off for good.  Celorie came in a minute ago and I am afraid that he will make some crack and embarrass me or something--not that it would matter too much, but the least he can get to say, the better.
The sun is shining and it looks like a wonderful day.  It was that way yesterday in between the rain storms.  Bob says there is a little snow on the pass now, so maybe it won't be long till we get to go skiing.  Do you think it will be possible for us to go very much?
Guess what, I have a bright idea--why don't you start saving your pennies--then when we get a substantial sum, we can buy a little something for our hope chest.  I have twentyeight cents so I am going to buy some dishtowels.  If we had a dollar we could buy a cooking utensil or a towel or something useful and practical.  Don't you think that is a good idea.  You'll never miss pennies and they mount up reasonably fast.  Anyway I think it would be fun.  What do you think?
Goodbye, sweet, and hope you write me a letter today even though I was a baad girl and didn't write one to you.
All my love and lots of kisses,
                                                                       Dotty

                                                                             Wednesday

Hello, my love -
Was disappointed no end at not getting a letter today - don't know for sure whether you'll get this tomorrow on account of I have been to a lecture at the Medical School and it is now after 9:30, but maybe if I hurry I can make the mail OK -
Did you look up my draft number in the paper - I seem to be in pretty good position, I hope - they shouldn't send me an invitation to join the army for anyway a year yet and by then maybe I can have a few arguments fixed up for them  - I read through the manual of regulations regarding physical exams under the selective service act and it's sure a good thing my number is pretty far down the list on account of my eyes probably wouldn't exempt me - according to what I read today and it's official, one has to be practically blind to be deferred -
My number was the 5388th drawn back in D.C. and Von's was the 5288th - quite a coincidence -
I wonder if you are having as hard a time waiting for the 9th of Nov. as I am - gosh darn it - it still seems like such a long time away -
Had another little confidential talk with the secretary today - she says it's costing them more being married than they had figured, but not too much - I'm not too worried about that though, on account of 6 months from now we should be in pretty fair shape -
Got a letter from Ed Pubols today - he thinks I should get married as soon as I can, but we don't disagree there - Also he says to send you his regards.
                                                                             Love and kisses,
                                                                                        Bill
