October 31, 1940 Thursday "I have been having more fun since I decided not to study"

                                                                  Thursday

Hello - sweet - or should I say #5388 -
Yep I knew this morning what it was and did I ever feel relieved - Mildred had the Oregonian and she looked them up for Melba and I -
Withdrew from school today and it certainly was a gyp - out of $17.00 cash paid in I only got back $.90.  Still have coming my 5.00 fee and my Oregana but lost $6.10 on the deal-  I have been having more fun since I decided not to study - just bumin around -
How you like my stationery - cleaned out a couple boxes of old letters and found this - so decided I best use it up -
Hope the time doesn't drag between now and the 9th - Mildred went on her vacation for the weekend and work is a little more interesting, -
We are on a 40 hour week - but a lot that means to us except more overtime money - but I do wish we didn't have to work so long and so indefinitely all the time-
Damit is running fine now - The rattles were very minor and fixed in no time -
I sure am lost without you -  Went to the Side again last night - but for some reason it isn't the same anymore -
I'm so proud - my debts are gradually decreasing - and after November -
     Yippee!!! --
Booo - don't let the goblins git cha tonight - and think of me once in a while -
Love & kisses and then more love & kisses -
                                                                   Dotty

                                                                            Thursday

Dear Dotty -
Guess the rainy season is here for keeps now - it has been coming down all day without a let-up - and I don't like it at all -  I always feel so much better when the sun is shining - you should see the Medical School campus - it's mostly mud now -
Did you find my draft number OK?  I am more than halfway down the list which should keep me out for a while - if they decide, and they should, that hospitals are vital to national defense, I may be deferred permanently on that basis - I am kind of interested in knowing what numbers Karl and Battleson have - If you can find out let me know - also Tony -
Have been toying with the idea of coming down to Eugene Friday nite the 8th instead of Saturday - but guess it would be better if I waited till Saturday - don't want to ask too many favors of Mr. Couch until next May, when I will proably want at least a week - or do you think that's long enough -
Don't you go worrying your pretty little head about me trying to find an apartment - at present I am just looking around, and if a suitable apartment happens to become available about April and May in Marquam Manor, I want to be there - but I think we should be particular - don't you -
Think you have a good idea concerning the pennies - I will bring you down all I save between now and the 9th -  also you can do all the purchasing out of the penny fund - I probably wouldn't know what to buy anyway -
Saw C. Lyle Kelly down on the street-corner this evening and had quite a little chat with him - he is teaching a C.P.A. class in Portland Extension - also saw Spencer Collins down town -
What kind of a them are you having for your Gamma Alpha Chi dance - Anyway it sounds like it should be good fun and I think I can come down all right - I hope - also I agree with you that you should try to sell tickets to Frances, Ruth, and the other Dottie -
Have been reading about Homecoming in the Emerald - guess I will get there too late to register as an alumnus, but who cares - think maybe we can manage to see the second half of the football game anyway.
Well, tomorrow will be November and another month gone by - they can't go too fast for me though - also the 1st of the month - I am sure anxious to start saving money - if the car doesn't give me any more trouble for a while maybe some progress can be made -
Am going to a banquet tomorrow evening at the TB hospital - during the course of the affair, I will probably be introduced to everyone and maybe I might have to say a few words or something - I hope not -
Lots of love and kisses -
                                                                                Bill
