August 15, 1940 from Bill

                                                                                Thursday
Dear Dotty -
Was pleasantly surprised to receive your sweet little letter at the office this morning - As you probably know by now, I didn't write you last night - there was practically nothing to say, except that I woke up yesterday morning with a cold, and it seems to be getting worser and worser -
I am writting this little epistle during my lunch hour, on account of I don't think I'll have time to write later on -  I am going down to the doc's at 5 - eat at 6 - then wash my car - and tonite am going to play some bridge with Anet, George Jackson, and a fourth who is as yet unknown to me - but not a Kappa --
I hope you weren't fooling when you said you were going to write again last night - Anyway, I'll be looking for the letter --
Yesterday afternoon I felt pretty bad and it was awful hot and stuffy in the office, so I left about 2:30.  Then Von called me up and talked me into going out and playing some golf  (it wasn't hard) - We played West Hills, which is nothing but mountains and gulches - I had a 42 which is not good ----
By the way, Jane is no longer wearing Bob's pin - it seems that the romance is through for keeps this time - and Von seems to be happy about the whole affair - he is at present casting his eyes about for some queenie he can start taking out and maybe fall in love with (?) -
Dotty, it appears right now that I won't be coming down to Eugene this weekend - Haven't been able to find any passengers as yet, and the budget won't stand for my coming down alone -  I don't know how I'll be able to wait another week before seeing you, but I guess it must be -  and I hope you miss me just an awful lot -  do you know that this will be the first weekend we will have missed together since last November -  So I guess you had better concentrate on your studying and knitting - but remember to think of me every five minutes or thereabouts.
                                                                     With love,
                                                                              Bill
