August 28, 1940

[There are a bunch of letters postmarked this date - hopefully I have them in the right order!]

                                                                          Wednesday

Hello--

Guess you didn't get my letter Tuesday after all.  This is what I did--I didn't have a stamp, no money, neither did Mom, so I just didn't put a stamp on it and no return address, thinking that they would collect the 3¢ from you.  Apparently they didn't and the letter is reposing in the dead letter office.  Fine thing.  After this I am going to make a point of having enough stamps on hand.

Wow, we sure aren't busy today and the time is dragging by something terrific.  The party was nice last night.  We all took Mrs. Eberdt one cup and saucer of the same pottery that we got for Marge.  I am beginning to like it better all the time, and think I'll start buying pieces for my despair barrell.  Would you like to eat your breakfast and other meals from that lovely dishware?  Anyway I think that it is pretty.

Tonight I have set out as one in which to study.  Seems that hard as I try I only really get one lesson finished a week.  Will have to do better than that.  One of these days I am going up to see Ruth and find out just what I will have to take to graduate this June.  Hope I don't get any bad news like having to finish out my Business Law to get credit for the four hours I have taken.  Woe is I if I do.  In that case, think I might just quit trying.

My car is sure dirty, and the tires are not changed yet.  Wish I would get up enough ambition to clean it up or get someone to help me.  This really isn't a hint, but if you take it that way, my feelings won't be hurt.

By the way, I don't know what to do this weekend.  I would like very much to come to Portland, but my purse strings won't allow it.  If you came down we could eat at my place all the time and you wouldn't have to spend any money for food.  Then we wouldn't have to do much but lie in the sun and that wouldn't cost you money.  If I came to Portland, we would have to go to Jantzen beach, eat dinner out, and oh lots of other things.  So----  Anyway I am anxious to know what you want to do.

I will go up to Tony's tonight to mail this letter and try to get the pictures from him.  Are you going to send the ones that you have now back or wait till you come up?  If and when you do?

Hope you will be able to make sense out of the jumble of words above.  I just read through it, and some of my sentence structures seem to be rather twisted.

Later--at home
I am sorry that you feel not so good.  I guess it is kind of tiring driving so far in so short a time, or somepin.  Thanks loads for taking the trunk to Aunt Edna and the button.  I wish this week would hurry up and go by.  The time has never seemed to drag so slow.

Say, you tell Dick Hill that I don't appreciate his trying to take you away from me by getting you other dates, etc.  But I do hope you have fun and I know you will.  If the party gets too rough you know what to do.  AAAnd if this blond wins your heart away from me, I won't like it a bit.

I seem to have run out of things to say, or I have already said them--again I say I'm sorry that you didn't get my letter.  My heart was in the right place, tho.  And now sweetheart, guess I'll go mail this so can come home and get to work.

                                                                      Lots of love,

                                                                             Dodo

P.P.S.
Helengray & I are driving to Portland Saturday evening and will arrive sometime that night - about 10:00 P.M.
I think this is pretty definite altho we are both sleeping on it tonight before deciding for sure - I hope and think I can stay at Aunt Vesta's if she doesn't decide to go gallivanting off someplace ---
Is this all right with you? --

                                                      Love
                                                          Dotty -

                                                                             Wednesday

Dear Dotty -
Have been doing a little concentration concerning the coming weekend and have come to a decision, I hope - Anyway it looks as though it would be better for me to come down providing of course that you don't want to come up - Personally I think we can have more fun down there anyway and as you say it is less expensive than Portland -  By the way you better set a third place for a couple of meals as I'll probably be there for some -  I hope I get paid Saturday rather than after Labor Day as I am really broke at the present time - Oh yes, I think maybe I can get a couple of passengers too which will help.
Just heard over the radio that the conscription bill just passed the Senate - so it looks as though some ways and means will have to be discovered if I want to keep from spending a year in the army - this is really getting serious -
Found out the details about this party I am supposed to go to tomorrow nite - It seems that this beautiful nurse of whom I was telling you - Betty Childs - is hostess for the affair - (or maybe a brawl) and she is asking Dick Hill - So they got together and paired me off with an extra girl, whose name is Eleanor Johnson and who is secretary to the Medical Director at the Multnomah Hospital -  By the way, it seems that this Betty Childs has been having a romance with Paul Cushing during the last couple of years - You knew that he was coming up here to teach at Multnomah College in a couple of weeks -
Anyway, regarding the aforementioned party, I hope you don't mind if I go - it's really not a date anyway - will tell you all about it later -
Had lunch with Battleson and Zane Kender today - Bob came up to see me and seemed to think I had a pretty good set-up after he saw my office - He is on his way to Montana on his vacation - He also intimated that he might get a new car if he could finance it - Von also came up to see me and borrow my golf clubs - Oh yes speaking of golf, I'd appreciate your telling Tony that I'll be down again this weekend and that I'd like to play with him early Sunday or Monday - or both -
What's this party you mentioned in your letter - don't remember your telling me about it and now I am curious -
Well, now that I have finally decided to come down this weekend I feel much better - hope we have good weather so we can go swimming or picnicking and stuff - but it really doesn't matter - just so I see you -

                                                                          Love and kisses,
                                                                                   Bill

[And then another letter from Dotty with no envelope]:

I'm awful glad you decided to come down here.  I think that is really better in the long run.  Besides, when I talked to Helengray this noon, she got a wire from Lloyd saying that he was coming down Friday, so that settled that.  Hope you understood my wire.  It does sound kind of funny now that I read it back -- anyway the idea was to phone Aunt Vesta that I changed my mind again and wouldn't be coming to Portland.  She probably wouldn't be there this weekend anyway.  Soo I shall look forward to your arriving here Saturday, and I will call Tony and tell him you want to play golf Sunday morning.

I did study last night, and then Marilyn and Buckey came over for a while.  They were down to see some things about the house and decided to stay all night.  It was nice seeing them for a change.  So guess I will study some more tonight and finish up the lesson.

It's getting hot today and there isn't any work to do.  But now there is - so best I get to work.

This conscription bill stuff has me kind of worried, too.  What to do!!  I finally called up Ruth and I am going up tomorrow to see how I and the school and my credits stand up.  Cross your fingers.

Guess we will have lots of fun this weekend and I am looking forward to seeing you soon.

                                                                  Lots of love,
                                                                       Dotty
