August 16, 1940 from Dotty

Dearest,

I did miss your letter today, although I should kick cause I didn't write to you last night -- for the same reason that you didn't write to me.  I am going to miss you a whole lot this weekend -- but I will go out in the back yard and lie in the sun.  It's a cinch I won't do anything else.  And, too, maybe it is a good thing that you aren't coming down.  I ah have one of my hate weeks on again -- Mr. "C" makes me so damn mad -- and he knows it too this time.  Anyway I will be awful, awful glad when I don't have to work here anymore, and I am looking forward to that moment with the greatest of glee.

I hope that your cold doesn't get any worse, and I can't imagine where you could have caught it.  Maybe from some of you galivanting around.  You should (?) get a good rest this weekend, which will be good for you.

I finished lesson 10 last night -- thank goodness.  I also did some more hemstitching -- but each napking gets a little bit bigger than the last, in the hemstitching part.  Guess we will have to use them for everyday only.  Don't know what to start working on next -- maybe you have a bright idea?

My battery is getting lower and lower.  Sometimes it takes quite a while for it to start.  This noon -- I was parked down by the Greyhound depot -- when I started to start, it wouldn't.  These three men were walked down the street and they asked if they could push.  I said no but they could crank it if they wanted too.  But they said that three of them ought to push it all right, so they did, and the car started.  More fun.  Speaking of the car -- I asked Paul to get me another tire.  Do you suppose (or have I asked you already?) that the next time you come up you could bring it with you.  If he can get it for me you can call him and ask him where it will be, etc.  That would be awfully sweet of you if you could and would.

I guess it is about time that Bob and Jane did break up -- after all these years -- if it wan't going so good with them.  Now they will both have a chance to find and fall in love with someone else.  Does Bob have anyone particular in mind?  Guess I could kinda go for him myself if you weren't in the picture.  But don't tell him.

Haven't gone down to sell my clothes yet, but sold two sweaters to Melba for 75¢ and think I can sell her a dress, too, if I do as good a selling job and talking as I did for the sweathers.  It really is getting to be kinda fun now.  Wish old Mose were around and maybe I could nab him for a few cents.  My nose is getting longer and longer.

Later -- at home.  Just finishedn ironing all my clothes, and now I am ready to rest.  Twas quite a job.  There is some real good dance music on the radio and for a change I feel like maybe swinging out -- but no Bill.  I am going to be an orphan this week.  The peaches are ripe so mom has gone to stay with Aunt Hetty for a while during the rush.  She was so excited you would think that she was going away for a month or two.

P.S.  I'm not mad anymore but I sure had a good spell this morning.  How have you liked the various colors of stationery?  I thought the pink was especially lovely.  I hope you will miss seeing me as much as I already miss you.  Wow this table sure is a mess.  Guess I will try to clean it off -- the trouble is that I need to use all of the junk on it at various times during the day and I have no other place to put them.  Oh well.

Now I am going out to mail this.  Hope the car starts, and I hope I get a letter from you tomorrow.

                                                                          With lots of love,

                                                                                    Dotty
