August 16, 1940 from Bill

                                                                          Friday

Hello, sweet --

How are you getting along with your work - also the studying and knitting and stuff - You ought to be able to accomplish a little more this weekend without me around to take up all your time - darn it, I sure wish I could come down but I'm afraid you and Eugene will have to get along without me for another week - It's going to seem funny though not seeing you come Saturday nite ----

Remember the cold I mentioned I had - Well, it got pretty bad, but I stayed home this afternoon and I think it is under control now, I hope -  I went bowling with Anet and George Jackson last nite and it didn't help my cold at all - in fact, I think it caused a relapse - However, I bowled 180, which is really pretty good , and won the nickels from Jackson, who had 155, and Anet, who had 126 -

It looks as though I will have at least 2 passengers coming down next weekend - Both Bob Mosier and Bob Von may go down and also a couple of the gals at the Medical School are seriously considering the same - so maybe I can charge them enough to buy you a couple little birds, or would you like that --

By the way, if Von comes down, I imagine he would want a date for Saturday nite and I wondered if maybe you could be working on that -  Do you suppose Margo would go out with him, or do you know anybody else -  Would appreciate it if you would look into this, as then it would be much easier to talk Bob into coming down -

I haven't decided how to occupy my time this weekend except that I'll undoubtedly write you a number of letters and will probably play a little golf Sunday -  John Dick will be here and he and Anet & Jackson and I are going out Sunday morning - that should be fun - tomorrow I am finally going to wash my car. I really think it looks pretty good down underneath but I want to check up for sure -

Mr. Couch is due back this weekend, so starting next week I'm really going to get into the swing of things and start working, I hope - I really don't like sitting around any- more than you don't also - or does that make sense-

By the way, have I told you yet that I'm going to miss you an awful lot this weekend, or do you already know that, no doubt --  Also, I was just a little disappointed at not getting a letter today - think it would have made me feel a lot better -

They tell me at the doc's office that my eyes are beginning to show some improvement - personally, I can't tell, but I'll take their word for it -

I am going to get this letter mailed about 8 o'clock and I hope to be in bed by 9 - I hope I feel better in the morning but if not, will probably stay home again - it's sure nice being one's own boss for a while.

Remember that you are going to be a good little girl this weekend and write me at least one or two letters, I hope --

                                                                 Love and kisses,
                                                                      Bill
