August 19, 1940 from Bill

                                                                         Sunday nite

Hello, dear --

Here it is Sunday nite 9 PM and I just discovered the mail goes out at 7:20 Sundays - golly, what will I do now - Anyway, if you feel a bit put out at not getting this until Tuesday, I am really very sorry -
Also it happens that I have not received a letter from you since last Thursday which makes me rather unhappy.
Did you miss me very much over the weekend, I hope, like I missed you -  I'll try not to let this happen again for a while - it's a cinch I'll be in Eugene the next two weekends and maybe the one after that you could possibly come up to Portland - or should we talk about that later -
Right now I should like to tell you about the weekend - Honestly, Dotty, as long as I couldn't come down to Eugene, I wasn't exactly looking forward to it, but it really turned out swell.  Got rid of my cold and everything -
Last night after dinner a bunch of the boys and gals here at the boarding-house decided to visit a friend who lives at Lake Oswego, so I went along - This place was really a mansion, out in West Bay, and they had canoes, motor boats, swimming, hot dogs, punch, ping-pong, etc - Another fellow and I who didn't have dates took the canoe out for a while, and I just couldn't help wishing you were there instead of him.  The moon was really full and looked as big as a house, and the water and the air were warm and smooth - What a night for romance - darn it -
This morning I got up at 9:00 and after breakfast went down to the Carlton Hotel and pulled Bob Anet and John Dick out of bed, where they were sleeping raw, on account of the hot weather which was 99 here yesterday they tell me although it seemed hotter - Then picked up George Jackson and went out and started hitting that golf ball -
It was really hot and our games were all lousy except that I got hot for about 5 holes in a row and finally ended up winning 75¢ which more than paid for my golf but not the cokes, root beer floats, and ice cream bars -
After that we buzzed back into the city and picked up Bob Von and then we all whipped out to Dick Watson's place at Lake Oswego also - stopping en route to purchase some cantalopes, watermelon, potato salad, and some orange pop - what no beer - no -
The water was really great and we had a lot of fun - Anet won 2 beers by making a running dive over the rail of the boathouse, which was about 15 feet up from the water - Also Dick & Anet won 25¢ from George and I in a rubber of bridge - we didn't get out of there until 7 o'clock and we thought it was about 5 when we started to go - Then into town and buying a sandwich and a glass of milk besides waiting for John, who bought a full-course dinner - what a man - and then by the time I took everybody home it started to get late, and so here I am writing this letter at this hour, or is it a letter - sometimes I wonder -
Right now would be a good time to tell you I love you - haven't told you for quite a while, but just wanted to tell you again just to be doing it - you don't mind, do you - I feel kinda silly now anyway, but this is one thing I am serious about - Sure took me a long time to say it didn't it -
I didn't spend much money over the weekend - aren't you proud of me - could be that I'll bring a little bird down next weekend - which species do you want this time -
Tomorrow will be a busy day up at the office - Mr. Couch will be back and I'll start jumping around for a change - certainly have got a lot of things for him to look at but he will probably be so busy he won't get around to seeing me until Tuesday or Wednesday.  I hope not -
By the way, I hope I get a letter from you tomorrow - I'm worried.
Von wants to come down for sure, this weekend, so you see what you can do about fixing him up with a date for Saturday nite and let me know what the situation is -
This Oregon picnic and dance is happening Tuesday and a bunch of the boys and girls seem to be going - Bob Anet and I have no dates so we are going to take each other and see what the deal is - have an idea we can have some fun -
The damn needle on my speedometer fell off yesterday - very peculiar - everything happens to me - now I don't know how fast or slow I am going - I understand it's rather a delicate and expensive process getting it back again - so I guess I'll let it go for awhile - By the way I have gon 553 miles since coming back from the beach -
Will be very happy to write you every day this week if you write me the same - ok it's a deal -
                                          Lots of love and kisses,
                                                                            Bill
